Melissa Buchanan
Principal / Director
Melissa Buchanan is the Principal and Director of Reign Legal, a family law firm based in Bendigo and servicing clients throughout regional Victoria. Originally from the Echuca–Moama region, Melissa began her legal career in 2008 after graduating with a Bachelor of Laws from Deakin University. By the age of 27, she had co-founded her first law practice, and in 2019 she launched Reign Legal with a mission to deliver legal services differently — with clarity, confidence, and client empowerment at the centre.

Melissa’s approach

Melissa believes in uncomplicated legal solutions and strong, proactive relationships, and is known for providing practical, jargon-free advice and for creating tailored strategies that give clients confidence and control during some of the most challenging times in their lives.
Also sought out for her work in reproductive assistance law, particularly in the preparation of surrogacy and donor agreements, Melissa’s clients include same-sex couples and single parents engaging in international surrogacy arrangements. Her work in this space focuses on safeguarding the legal rights of all parties and ensuring compliance with Australian family law obligations. To date, she has maintained a 100% success rate in facilitating the return of children born overseas to intended parents in Australia, with the process usually completed within a month of the child’s birth.
A community focus
Melissa values her local community and is a current Board Director of the Bendigo Health Fundraising Advisory Board, where she plays a strategic role in guiding the Foundation’s philanthropic efforts to improve local health services. She is also an active advocate for community-based initiatives and leads her team at Reign Legal in annual campaigns supporting the region. She has served as a judge for the Bendigo Business Excellence Awards for many years, supporting local innovation and professional growth. She is also a strong advocate of wellbeing in the legal profession and has led the transition of Reign Legal to a four-day working week to reduce burnout and improve productivity.
